Louisville 2022 Call for Papers

Louisville 2022 Call for Papers

The International Lawrence Durrell Society invites paper proposals for a session at the Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture after 1900 held on 24-26 February 2022.  The theme for the session is “’Everything miasmic’: Modernist Bodies in Sickness and Health.”

Discourse on the body often relies heavily on normative rhetoric rooted in ideologies that permeate every aspect of society.  Analyses of how modernist writers represent bodies and embodiment can, thus, disclose much about both individual and communal mores, as well as reveal various stylistic and thematic preoccupations.  The ILDS requests proposals for 20-minute presentations that focus on modernist depictions of the body. Potential subjects include but are not limited to:

  • The 1918-1919 influenza outbreak
  • War and the body
  • Public health and the body
  • Bodily mutilation
  • Disease and the body
  • “Beautiful” bodies
  • Body shaming
  • Bodily violation
  • Working bodies
  • Artifice and the body
  • Ability and the body
  • Gendered bodies
  • Aging bodies
  • Racialized bodies
  • Athleticism and the body
  • Fashionable bodies
  • Regulated bodies
  • Marginalized bodies
  • Tattoos and scarification
  • Bodies and identity
  • Bodies and nationalism

Deadline for submission of the proposal is 3 September 2021.

Please plan for a presentation of no more than twenty minutes.  Submit your proposal by email.

Please include two attachments in pdf, rtf or doc format:

  1. The first attachment should consist of a 300-word abstract (double-spaced and titled), omitting all references to the submitter.
